Elias Goebel

Full stack and infrastructure

React on top.Linux underneath.

Full stack engineer at BII GmbH. I build web applications and run the Linux infrastructure they depend on.

Who is doing the work

Hey, I'm Elias Goebel. I build web applications from backend to frontend, and I run the Linux infrastructure they depend on. The degree behind it is Games Engineering, which is where the computer graphics and interactive systems come from. I'm mostly self taught, and at my best in a team that shares a human standard of communication.

German is my native language. English is on C2 level.

Where I work in the stack

All four layers, usually on the same project. The point is not that I specialise in one of them, but that I can work across all of them.

  1. Interface

The part people actually use, including 3D in the browser when the product calls for it.

    • React
    • TypeScript
    • Three.js
  2. Services

The application behind it, and the APIs that move data across.

    • C#
    • Rust
    • Python
    • REST
  3. Data

Schemas that hold up, and queries that stay quick as the tables grow.

    • PostgreSQL
    • SQL
  4. Infrastructure

The machines all of it runs on, how it gets deployed, and the private network around it.

    • Linux
    • Ansible
    • Docker
    • Podman
    • CI/CD
    • WireGuard

Off the clock the same skills point at games, hardware, and private projects.

  • Unity
  • OpenGL
  • C++
  • ESP32
  • Arduino
  • Raspberry Pi
  • Home Assistant

  1. 2022-now

    Work2022-now

Full stack engineer and system administrator

    BII GmbH, Dresden

React, TypeScript, C#, Rust and Three.js on the product side. Linux servers, WireGuard VPNs, Ansible, Docker and Podman underneath, plus the CI/CD that ships it. I built the reusable security pipeline the company repository runs on, and I am the person who gets called when something in between breaks.

  2. 2020-2025

    Education2020-2025

    Games Engineering, BSc

    Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg

Software engineering, algorithms, computer graphics, artificial intelligence and interactive systems, with complex team projects in the Game Labs. Thesis: a GPT-based, ontology-based serious game analysis assistant, graded 1.0. Final grade 2.0, earned while working at BII for the last two and a half years of it.German university grades run from 1.0, the best, down to 5.0, which means failed.

  3. 2020

    Work2020

    Stonemason

    Traco, Bad Langensalza

A year of physical work between school and university, cutting and finishing stone. It taught me to be patient, and that a good result is worth the time it takes to get there. It also helped me finance my university studies.

  4. 2019

    Work2019

    Agricultural worker

    Mount Wolfe Farm, Ontario, Canada

Five months in an entirely English-speaking place: harvest and processing, customer conversations, and selling produce at local markets. This is where my English went to C2.

  5. 2017

    Work2017

    C# software developer

    Ruhlamat Automated Technologies, Marksuhl

    Now MackSmaTec GmbH.

An internship writing C# for automated production systems. The first time I worked inside a software team instead of on my own.

  6. 2015

    Work2015

    System integration engineer

    MüCom Systeme GmbH, Mühlhausen

An internship building and repairing desktop PCs and laptops, and my first go at IT support for real customers.

    Education2011-2019

    Abitur

    Salza-Gymnasium, Bad Langensalza

Selected work

My home notices when someone is in it

I've had two laptops with cameras in them, and a self-hosted Home Assistant that already ran the lights and the blinds. Now, my home sends me a message when someone is in it. Four steps from a dead webcam to my phone.

  1. Two dead webcams

Both came out of laptop lids that were never going back into service. The camera modules were still fine.

  2. Soldered onto USB

I soldered two old USB-A connectors into each camera module by hand, which turns a bare ribbon camera into something usable for every computer.

  3. Home Assistant picks them up

The camera feeds land in the Home Assistant instance I already self-host, next to the lights, the blinds and whether anyone is home.

  4. Telegram gets there first

Motion in a room that should be empty, and a self-written Telegram bot that sends a message to my phone. The lights turn on automatically as well, so I can see what is going on before I get there.

Games as a big part of my life

Starting with a solo jump-and-run in Unity across 2018 and 2019, a Tetris clone built with a friend, and a game jam after that. Ending in a thesis about a GPT-based AI assistant that analyses serious games against a scientific ontology, graded 1.0.

Unity, C#, C++, OpenGL

Two game screens side by side, an arrow between them: a bright 2D platformer level on the left, a dark neon top-down level on the right.

Now working on

Three things in progress. None of them are finished, which is why they are here and not above.

  1. A server that rebuilds itself

Every service I self-host, described in Ansible, so a machine that dies comes back without me having to remember what was on it.

    • A playbook per service
    • One command from bare install to running
    • The config in version control, not in my head
  2. Sleep tracker, off the phone

An app I wrote for myself that currently keeps its data on the device. The next step is to sync it to my own server to keep progress across multiple devices.

    • Sync to self-hosted storage
    • History that survives a new phone
    • Nobody else holding the data
  3. Expenses from a photo

Point a camera at a receipt and have the split worked out, the way Splid does it, without anyone typing the numbers in. And without any third party service holding the data.

    • Receipt scanned and read
    • Shared costs split automatically
    • Running against my own backend
